Instruments and lessons for aspiring band students
The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest level of achievement for a girl scout in high school. It is an 80-hour service project equivalent to the Boy Scout Eagle Award dedicated to improving the community. One requirement of the gold award is to identify a need and address it in a sustainable way. Through my school years, I noticed that fewer students were participating in the music program. Some children had not been exposed to instruments or had other personal obstacles and weren't taking the chance to participate in the music program. I wanted to ensure that each student had the opportunity to explore band and other music programs. Through this project, I hope to grow the music program at all levels, now and in the future.
To earn my Gold Award, I will complete a three part project promoting the music program in schools. The first phase will involve an instrument drive to collect donations of new or used instruments. I will have instruments cleaned and repaired as needed and prepare them for student use. Second, I will organize my peers to offer free music lessons for band students in grades 4-8 at Bollman Bridge Elementary School and Patuxent Valley Middle School. The students will learn to play their instruments at a higher level by working with Hammond High School students in the Tri-M Music Honor Society. For the third phase of my project, I will create a recruitment video to encourage 8th graders to continue with music through high school. To make this project sustainable, I will collaborate with the Tri-M Music Honor Society to continue this mentorship in future years.
